Resumo: Optimal capacitor placement determines the size and location of capacitors to be installed on a radial distribution feeder. The capacitor placement problem is a combinatorial optimization problem having an objective function composed of power losses and capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints that are commonly solved by employing mathematical programming methods. This paper presents a capacitor placement method that employs modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) approaches with operator of velocity based on Gaussian and Cauchy distributions. The proposed PSO approaches are compared to a 9-section feeder problem with 3 locations available for placement of capacitors. Numerical results show that the validated PSO approaches can achieve an optimal solution for the proposed case study.
